Lazy Guide to Exercise (How to Get Motivated & Started).

lazy guide to exercise
Let's be real. It is insanely hard to start exercising and follow through. There are just some days (or, for me, most days) that you can't be bothered or have absolutely no motivation. However, staying fit and eating healthy is something that we all should do. So, how does a lazy person even begin living a better lifestyle (without having to do much...)? In no way am I an expert on fitness or nutrition, but here is how I got started and what works for me!

1. UNDERSTAND WHY YOU WANT TO BEGIN.

Before you do anything, you need to understand yourself and what your body is capable of. Why do you want to get fit & healthy? The whole reason I started working out and trying to eat well was because I was/ and still am overweight. On the other hand, I know that even if I diligently exercise, my body can never be as thin as a model's. It is important to keep those limitations in mind as well as external factors (like your schedule) when formulating your goals.

2. SET PERSONAL, REASONABLE GOALS.
Make both short- term and long- term goals. What do you want as your end goal? Personally, my overall goal is to look my best and feel more energized. Remember, it is okay if your goals are intangible. It really isn't always about a number on a scale, but how you feel. Also, it is possible to appear slimmer, but not have lost weight at all! Some examples of my short- term goals include:
  • Going to the gym at least 3 times a week.
  • Eating a maximum of one sweet beverage/snack/dessert a day.
  • Running non-stop for 30 seconds longer then the last time I ran.

3. START OFF SIMPLE.
You don't have to just jump into it. You can start by going on walks everyday, playing a sport with friends, or finding a few exercise circuits to do at home (there are some cool ones on Musely). At- home exercises are easy to integrate in your daily life because you can do it while still watching TV :P. All of this will help build up your strength!

4. SIGN UP FOR A GYM THAT SUITS YOU.
If you're lazy like me, you probably need a gym to get started. It will get you out of the house more, which will automatically burn some calories. Also, if you don't go, the looming membership fee will hold you accountable. Make the most out of your money! To further incentivize yourself, join a gym with features that excite you. These days, there are so many options to choose from. If you like running, find one with a track. Or if you get bored easily, you can just take a bunch of different classes (like spinning or cardio barre). Or you can even do a mixture of everything!

When I first started, I was debating whether to try out a personal trainer or join a conventional gym. One day, I stumbled upon Koko Fit Club. It is a digital gym that designs a unique workout plan for you based on your goals and strength statistics. A daily session is split up into 15 minutes of cardio and around 30 minutes of weight training. It is really cool because there are monitors that tell you exactly what to do - from the incline of the treadmill to your body's form for a particular exercise! In addition to Koko, I go on long runs around my neighborhood, take an occasional class, and do some at-home ab/inner thigh exercises!

5. MAKE A SCHEDULE.
Write down the days/ times you want to go to the gym every week. Make it a routine. It feels so good to cross it off your agenda! Do switch it up sometimes! If your routine becomes mundane, you will want to stop exercising. But don't do it. Just make changes. I love finding new elliptical Tabata/HIIT exercises and trying out a weird boot camp class with my friends.

6. GET GEARED UP.
Nothing motivates me more than purchasing new things. Go buy a snazzy workout outfit, get a fun spill-proof water bottle, and make a "pump-up" playlist (right now I'm listening to dancePOP on Spotify).

I love getting crops with side pockets so I can listen to music when I work out. If you don't know if you're a "sweat-er" or not, wear a tank top that is either white or black. Then, you don't have to worry about sweat marks!

7. ALWAYS MAKE LITTLE EFFORTS.
Multiple small actions here and there will eventually add up. You don't need to make grand gestures in order to become healthier. When you can, just take the stairs instead, park your car at the opposite end of the parking lot, or pack fruit as a snack.

Eating healthy and exercising go hand in hand. If you better your nutrition, you will have more daily energy and workouts will feel easier!

8. DON'T BEAT YOURSELF UP.
Change does not happen overnight and we all slip once in a while. My biggest tip for losing weight is to do it gradually and make it a lifestyle. Definitely don't restrict yourself. I am a firm believer that you can still eat chocolate cake (maybe just less ;)) and achieve your fitness goals.

I hope all of these tips helped. In my future lazy guides, I'll write about some of my workouts in more detail and share a few healthy recipes too :).

Until next time,
